Screening & Talk: REAL DMZ PROJECT 2013 – Mark Lewis
Ontario born, London-based artist, Mark Lewis makes film and digital works. By using film as a gallery medium, he investigates the ways in which the medium, film reflects and forms critique of dominant cultural forms as they are represented in cinema. His practice has also been focused on the technology of film and the exploration of the everyday through the cinematic language. His films, which have been shown world-wide, are often short, precise exercises on particular techniques.
In 1998, he co-founded with Charles Esche a research and publishing organization Afterall. He is currently co-editorial director at Afterall, and a research professor at Central Saint Martins College of Art. In 2009, he represented Canada at the 53rd Venice Biennale with the exhibition “Cold Morning” which was curated by Barbara Fischer. He has had solo exhibitions at Vancouver Art Gallery(Canada), PS1(USA), Forte Di Bard (Italy)Man Museo D’Arte (Italy), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Vienna), FACT (Liverpool). His work has been included in collections such as the National Gallery of Canada, Museum of Modern Art New York, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and the Centre Pompidou (Paris). His recent works are on view at Vancouver Art Gallery’s offsite until March 30th 2014.
The upcoming screening at Art Sonje Center will feature Lewis’ major works, followed by the artist talk, in which the artist will reflect on his impression and thoughts of the DMZ region in relation to his new project.
