“My new performance at Art Sonje Center, Watermelon Sons has two recognisable starting points. One is Exercise in movement that I tried out in Yogjakarta in the program organised by Electric Palm Tree in 2008. (Manahatas Dance is also commissioned by the same program). Moving an audience around within an architectural space to create different sets of views was a trajectory I had wanted to continue but didn’t have the chance to. The second is a short presentation of several moments, (or Habeas Corpus), that I made at Kunsthalle Basel. The audience was about ten people who were closely involved in the process of the installation in Basel. Habeas Corpus (literally meaning to have the body (back)), was also their chance to see the potential of the space that I had prepared that could not be presented in the format of an exhibition. With this new performance at Art Sonje, I am continuing to engage the staff and friends of the museum through channels other than channels like artist talks, press release, etc. On my part, through these experiments, I attempt to split the meaning that can only be revealed within a locality (either local space or local time) from the meaning that wants to last and cross over to further distribution, generation, and the Future.
This time, I am working with the sons of the staff members of Samuso and their friends. The boys are going through puberty. I was interested in the gender dynamics of Samuso (All twenty members except for one representative are women). I am working with mothers who are raising sons. The performance is developed in three weeks during the second part of my residency provided by Art Sonje and will use the infrastructure that I developed in the first four weeks.”*
