Animals of Art(Die Ameise der Kunst) [Peter Sempel | 2010 | 94’00”] Jonathan Meese is the “enfant terrible” of the Berlin art scene, he is a self-proclaimed slave to what he calls the dictatorship of art. The Hamburg-based documentary film maker, Peter Sempel, has followed Jonathan Meese into his own world, which is illustrated by images of classic as well as contemporary art, and also includes footage from the animal world. Guest appearances and comments by artists, art-collectors and gurus such as Daniel Richter, Georg Baselitz, Harald Falckenberg and Bazon Brock turn this kaleidoscopic expedition into what the filmmaker, himself, has fittingly characterized as an “artoverkillmusikpoetrypsychofilm”. Portraits of eccentric artists are the specialty of the German experimental filmmaker, Peter Sempel. His internationally acclaimed films feature iconic artists such as Allen Ginsberg, Jonas Mekas, Ono Kazuo, many musicians such as Nick Cave, the Motorhead bassist Lemmy Kilmister, as well as punk legend Nina Hagen. Die Ameise der Kunst / Animals of Art is his latest film.
