Slowness of Speed

In Slowness of Speed, an exchange exhibition between Australia and Korea, each of the participating artists –Kimsooja, Young-jin Kim, Bae Bien-U, Keun-Byung Yook, Lee Bul, Hong-Chun Park, and Choi Jeong Hwa has his/her artistic techniques and styles. The concept of “speed” is redefined to mean the speed of the modernization process. As such, the exhibition attempts to recollect the value of “slowness” (analogized from “stroll” and “saunter”) or “living freely without any restraints” to represent a metaphorical interpretation of the current Asian plight, which had fallen into chaos with the encroaching western cultural discussions. Before coming to Seoul, the exhibition traveled to the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne in 1998 and Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney in 1999, and received a very positive reception from the Australian audience.
