SeDuk Lee
Art Sonje Center presents SeDuk Lee’s retrospective from the 25th of May to the 4th of July. SeDuk Lee has been in the center of the development of Modern Korean art history. This exhibition is aimed to outline SeDuk Lee’s entire artistic activity ranged from his early figurative works to abstract works in recent years. SeDuk Lee has been going along with 20th century modernism; figurative art, non-figurative art and abstraction in art.
SeDuk Lee has tried to harmonize western artistic languages with traditional Korean esthetics and colors throughout his entire art career. Although his active involvements in art, his other extensive activities in art education and art management have placed him more as an art director than as an artist. However, Lee has took a crucial role in Korean modern art history, therefore this exhibition illuminates his art works rather than his activities in art.
According to an analysis of the formal aspects of Lee’s paintings, his artistic output can be distinguished into five periods from figurative works, non-figurative works to abstraction art. On the third floor, his early works until 1975 will be presented. On the second floor, SeDuk Lee’s “poetic abstraction” after 1976 until recent years will be introduced.
