Sebastian Koeck: Moving Roofs

Art Sonje Center is pleased to announce the project exhibition Sebastian Koeck: Moving Roofs, running from December 10 to 15.

At the beginning of Don Quixote, the protagonist becomes convinced that an adversarial wizard has stolen his cherished library. What begins as a quest to recover it soon spirals into a series of unpredictable adventures. For Sebastian Koeck, Seoul embodies a similar spirit of serendipitous discovery, much like Cervantes’ classic. Seoul—a city where preserved history, specialized productivity, and collective excess converge in a tightly woven network of layered relationships—rewards curiosity. In his search Koeck discovered two “stolen rooms”—spaces nobody seemed to be missing. By extending roofs beyond their architectural shells, he creates vessels for dialogue and exploration. Koeck presents a series of new works utilizing the long-abandoned ticket office at Art Sonje Center and the (Together)(Together) located 200 meters away. Using collected materials—both tangible and intangible—he constructs a subjective history and contemporary reflection of the city often regarded as the Future.

About the Artist
Sebastian Koeck
Sebastian Koeck (b. 1990), based in Vienna, is currently living in Seoul as part of the SCA residency program. The central motif of Koeck’s practice is rooted in the search. By collecting, assembling, and collaborating with local manufacturers and distributors, he creates site-specific installations that amplify new perspectives. Influenced by personal history, storytelling, and chance, his works invite viewers into carefully structured atmospheres where the journey is as significant as the destination.
