Lee Bul
This exhibition introduces Lee Bul’s new series titled Cyborg, an extension from her earlier works, which narrate rather sensitive discussions on the body and gender with a sensuous handcraft approach and portray the human body as cultural borderlines. The artist juxtaposes images of masculine Cyborg characters shown in Korean and Japanese animations and comic books and of famous feminine figures from Western paintings such as “Venus” and “Olympia” in her Cyborg series. Her artwork not only portrays the human body within a patrilineal framework but also questions the quality of technology and the relationship between technology and the power behind technology. This new series was presented at the Hugo Boss Prize exhibition at Guggenheim Museum in New York along with her Monster series.
