Kyu-Tae Hwang: Contemporary Photography
The solo exhibition of Kyu-Tae Hwang features works that have yet to be exhibited due to their experimental approaches, differing from his other major works seen thus far. This exhibition is divided into two parts: black and white photographs and color images. The color photographs of his most recent works are essentially enlarged human-scale photographs of computer monitors or sticker labels that are sold at stationary shops. Such photographs are paradoxical, replacing something so familiar to our eyes to something so foreign and untrue. His black and white photograph works reanalyze photographs that were taken in the 60’s by reprinting specific parts or backgrounds taken from old photographs, giving a new perspective and relationship to the objects and background captured in the photo works.
The subjects of Hwang’s works have mostly been on ecology, environment, and technological development. Given the attention to the artist’s unpublished works, some newer astonishing and experimental photographs will be introduced during this exhibition.
