Hein-kuhn Oh: AJUMMA (Married Women)

This exhibition showcases a series of photographs on Ajumma taken over a span of more than two years. Hein-kuhn Oh uses strong artificial flashlight, even in broad daylight, in order to separate the main subject (Ajumma) from its surrounding background, to limit the viewer’s perspective to one’s own subjective beliefs. Thus, his photographs represent a “personal documentary,” portraying a first-hand, personal point of view on society. Through the portraits of the “Ajumma,” essentially married women who are a part of ordinary life, but non-existent in society, the artist conveys a common uncertainty and emotional insecurity that these women share.
