2013 Art Sonje Lounge Project #4: The Book Store
As the fourth Lounge Project in 2013, The Book Store presents a new display design for the lounge space at Art Sonje Center. For many years, the lounge has attracted many visitors as not only a multi-functional cultural space but also a book store inside the museum. This project focuses on vivifying the museum book store which serves to stimulate both intellectual and creative curiosity of the visitors with various types of publications, ranging from art theory and humanities to artist catalogs and magazines.
Mikyung Lee sought the efficient and visually stimulating ways of displaying the books through The Book Store. The structure with its bright primary colors catches our eye upon entering the lounge, but it is installed in an angle so that it does not reveal itself at once and addresses the sculptural quality with the interior and the exterior.
Mikyung Lee completed BFA from Seoul National University and studied at HBK Braunschweig in Germany. She has been working on projects that engage with public space and functionality, and the subject matter of communication in visual arts. Her works have been shown widely in Korea, including Public Furniture(Busan Biennale Sea Art Festival, Busan, 2006), Recycling Inc.(Arko Art Center, Seoul, 2007), Anyang Public Art Project(Anyang, 2007), B-side(doART Seoul, Seoul, 2008), 100 Daehangro(Arko Art Center, Seoul, 2009), Arumjigi Furniture Project(Plateau, Seoul, 2011), Hermes Foundation Misulsang prize show(Atelier Hermes, Seoul, 2012), Life A User’s Manual(Culture Station Seoul 284, Seoul, 2012)
