2011 Art Sonje Lounge Project #3: Kang Sung Eun
This series of drawings of the night or dawn is a product of the artist Kang Seong Eun’s journeys. The journeys contain both the planned trips for drawing works and the scenes from Kang’s everyday life. A panorama of Itaewon nightscape, which spans over 3m in width, is the artist’s new work intended for this lounge project exclusively. The artist chose the pencil as the medium for her drawings over ink because it allowed greater freedom of expression (Kang has long worked with ink in the past). According to the artist, the pencil is not only the medium that can clearly illustrate the wide spectrum of brightness to darkness, but it also served as the motive that broadened her scope – from the houses of the narrow alley ways initially to the roads in this city and mountains.
At the Art Sonje Center Lounge, you may view the drawing works of Kang Sung Eun that expresses her sensibilities using the pencil. Lounge Project starts with the invited artists redecorating the lounge of Art Sonje, and then offers a variety of programs and a space where free discussion and communication takes place.
