2009 Art Sonje Lounge Project

Art Sonje Lounge Project
Artist Choi Jeong Hwa, who has been active in diverse artistic fields including design, film, and architecture, has given a new look to the first floor of Art Sonje Center for his Ar Sonje Lounge Project. The project transforms the entire existing Art Sonje Center lounge including its cafe and bookstore into an artistic space of a different context.

Choi Jeong Hwa already participated in Platform in 2007, when he covered the walls of the Korean traditional house (hanok) located within Art Sonje Center with aluminum foil for his work “Se Han Do” as part of the Tomorrow exhibition. As an extension of his previous work, Choi Jeong Hwa invites visitors to experience the Art Sonje Center lounge space by covering its walls with aluminum foil or fluorescent paint and placing secondhand furniture. By using such everyday objects, the artist continues to create works which contain both life and art. The project which uses modern society’s mass-produced aluminum foil as its main material mixes with the atmosphere of Art Sonje Center—which has been the scene of open, experimental contemporary art exhibitions—to create a unique sense of spatiality through the metallic material. Bright lights hang from the ceiling and a pile of plastic baskets is installed as well, making the entire lounge an artwork in itself.

Art Sonje Lounge Project divides the exhibition space into two main areas. On the one hand, the art bookstore “The Books” greets visitors with its walls newly painted by the artist, while the remaining area is used for the library project An Offering: Public Resource and monthly discussion programs.
