Stefan Tiefengraber: Sewoon District, Zone 1-5
Art Sonje Center and Space for Contemporary Art present the exhibition Sewoon District, Zone 1-5 by Austrian artist Stefan Tiefengraber, who is currently participating in the SCA Residency Program. At the center of the exhibition is the experimental film Sewoon District, Zone 1-5 (세운지구 1-5 구역) (2025). Created using a machine built by the artist, the film documents an old commercial district in the heart of Seoul that is currently undergoing rapid and dramatic transformation. Using a recording technique developed specifically for this work, the artist explores the limits of perception through flickering images and rhythmically interrupted pulses of light. The visual texture of the film is shaped by the rapid rotation of the camera and influenced by chosen frame rate and shutter speed. This fragmentation produces a state between stimulus and reflection, between irritation and contemplation. The flickering acts not only as a visual phenomenon but also generates a ghostly landscape in which past, present and future seem to merge. In this exhibition, the film is accompanied by a series of black-and-white photographs through which the artist develops different documentary perspectives on the same urban space. A live concert by the artist will take place during the opening and closing events.

About the Artist
Stefan Tiefengraber (b. 1981) lives and works in Linz and Graz/Austria, currently he is a residency artist at SCA. His work ranges from kinetic sound installations and interactive installations to audio-video noise performances and experimental film. Tiefengraber experiments with the modification of devices, which are originally manufactured for different purposes. Combined with the perception of the audience, this experimental attempt of exploring old and new materials leads him to new and unpredictable results.
