Repetition: Repetition in Contemporary Art
The exhibition titled “Repetition: Repetition in Contemporary Art” is designed to look at various aspects of repetition revealed in contemporary art and consists of the collection of the Gyeongju Art Seonjae Center.
Repetition of the physical action leads to repetition of the visual form. Repetition of actions and forms interjects temporal elements by giving the still screen a sense of rhythm and continuity, and spatially, bring about the effect that the screen seems to extend indefinitely to the outside. Wherever the artist’s intention is, this physical or visual repetition leads both the actor and the viewer to the state of meditation and selfless.
Repetition of form is a method mainly used in the field of decorative art, and it was only after the 20th century that artists discovered new possibilities for repetition in the realm of pure art. Modern artists used the method of repetition to reproduce a continuous appearance of a moving object, draw out a visual illusion effect, or to emphasize the materiality and flatness of the work. On the other hand, through this method of repetition, the artist’s own trajectory of voluntary action or one aspect of the mass consumption society was revealed.
